The Importance of TMWA’s Water Tanks:

March 13, 2026

Quietly Supporting Reliable Water Service

Image of TMWA water storage tank. TMWA’s water tanks are such an established part of the local landscape, most people never give them a second thought. But they play a vital role in delivering safe, reliable water throughout our community. TMWA’s tanks help maintain steady water pressure, provide emergency storage and support efficient operations around the clock.

Most tanks are on hillsides, using gravity to deliver water to customers with minimal pumping. This improves reliability while reducing energy use. Tanks are often filled at night when demand is minimal and energy costs are low. TMWA’s system of tanks is online every day to meet demand. In addition, the system is insurance: storing water for use if a treatment plant has an outage or if a pump goes offline. This essential backup ensures uninterrupted service and critical reserves for emergencies—including fire.

TMWA maintains about 100 tanks, and like all infrastructure, they require scheduled inspections and maintenance to protect against corrosion and to extend their service life. Each year, a few tanks are taken offline during the low-demand winter months for inspections and repairs. While customers may not be aware of this work, ongoing maintenance helps ensure reliable, cost-effective water service, now and in the future.

Traditional tank roofs use internal beams that are hard to coat and are prone to corrosion, typically taking 2–3 months to paint. The new bent plate roofing moves these structural elements to the outside of the tank, creating a smooth interior surface that can be painted in one or two weeks: saving time and money!
