TMWA Response to EWG Report: Reno Water is Safe
In recent news reports you may have seen a story regarding the quality of Reno’s water. This story was based on inaccurate, misleading and irresponsible information from a report published by The Environmental Working Group (EWG) back in December 2009. They have used incorrect data in the report and Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) has attempted to correct that information several times. When we examined the data that EWG used we realized that 1/3 of their information was inaccurate including transcribing figures and reporting on untreated water that never reaches your tap. We discussed these inaccuracies with EWG and they agreed that the information was wrong and assured us that they would update their report, which they have failed to do.
We take our responsibility to provide safe, high quality water to our customers very seriously. We monitor frequently – more than 1,000 tests every month – to assure that your water meets the high standards of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Safe Drinking Water Act.
We are committed to transparency. If you want accurate information about the quality of the water you drink, go directly to the source. Every year, we mail each customer a Water Quality Report that includes detailed information on water quality, including any violations of health protective standards under the Safe Drinking Water Act. We have additional information available on our website and welcome calls from customers. If you have any questions about our water quality, please contact us via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us 834-8118.
