2020-2040 Water System Facility Plan

The 2020-2040 Water System Facility Plan is a comprehensive guide outlining the strategic improvements and updates to the Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) water system over the next two decades. This update, the fourth since TMWA's inception in 2001, addresses water demand projections, facility requirements, and infrastructure development in response to the region's growing needs.

Key aspects of the plan include:

  1. Water Demand Projections: The plan provides detailed forecasts of maximum day demands (MDD) through 2040. Our projections are based on historical data and regional growth patterns, ensuring that TMWA's infrastructure will meet both current and future water needs.
  2. Storage Requirements: The document evaluates the current and future needs for treated water storage, which is essential for managing daily peak demands, emergency situations, and fire suppression. It provides a breakdown of storage needs by region within the TMWA service area.
  3. Facility Improvements: The plan outlines and prioritizes upgrades and expansions necessary for maintaining water quality and system reliability, including the construction of new pump stations, treatment facilities, and expanded groundwater storage.
  4. Groundwater and Surface Water Resources: TMWA’s reliance on groundwater as a drought reserve and for peak usage is discussed in detail, along with plans to manage and improve groundwater capacity. Surface water treatment plant capacity and compliance with state regulations are also key components.
  5. Financial Planning: The 2020-2040 Water System Facility Plan allows TMWA to update projected capital improvement costs that are used to update Water System Facility Charges (new development connection fees).  These Water System Facility Charges (WSF) are used to recover costs for water infrastructure that TMWA has either previously installed or will be required to install to provide water service to new developments.
