Sophia Cardinal, a Northern Nevada native, grew up in Carson City and moved to Reno to attend the University of Nevada, Reno. She graduated with a degree in accounting and was awarded the Herz Gold Medal for having the highest GPA of her class. She began her professional career at Kohn Colodny, a local public accounting firm, and earned her CPA license shortly after. Sophia found her true calling in government finance, however, when she joined Washoe County’s Department of Water Resources in August 2013. She played a central role in the consolidation accounting when TMWA absorbed the County’s water utility operations and then stayed at the County to support the sewer/reclaimed water Utilities Fund, Western Regional Water Commission, Central Truckee Meadows Remediation District, and Equipment Services. Sophia transitioned to TMWA in January 2020 and was promoted to Financial Controller in March 2022. She enjoys being in a position to serve her community, to work with others, and of course, to build awesome spreadsheets in Excel.
