The Nevada chapter of the American Public Works Association has recognized Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) with the 2020 Project of the Year Award in the category of Historical Restoration/Preservation for projects with a budget less than $5,000,000.
This unique and challenging project included removal and replacement of several key components of the Fleish Flume, overflow and turbine-tailpiece structures. The challenging terrain in which the work was conducted included rugged, 30+ degree slopes, which prevented the use of traditional equipment and construction methods. Some of the work was also done under water in the high flow of the spring runoff. Difficult conditions to say the least. And, finally, close proximity to the Truckee River required extra care in terms of environmental protection.
Inaccessibility along the canyon slopes and within the river itself also presented challenges during the design phase, making it difficult to predict field conditions. Constant field adjustments by the design and construction teams were required to achieve TMWA’s performance expectations and excellent communication, creativity and flexibility were imperative to the success of this project.
