Maintaining Water Quality, With Less Chemicals
In our water treatment process chemicals are used to remove contaminants to meet health requirements. We continually look for ways to reduce chemical usage in the treatment process while maintaining the high quality of the water we deliver to you. Soda ash is a natural mineral used to adjust water’s pH balance which is important to help reduce the potential for corrosion of plumbing systems. We worked with the Washoe County District Health Department and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) and initiated a study regarding optimization of the pH adjustment process. Together we studied lowering the amount of soda ash and the effects on drinking water, while maintaining a satisfactory pH balance.
I am happy to say that the Washoe County District Health Department and NDEP just approved the lowering of our finished water pH setting from 8.3 to 8.0. This change represents 15 months of work and study and will result in a savings of nearly $50,000 a year. This great outcome is due to many very talented water treatment specialists who work to produce water that meets all drinking water standards at the lowest possible cost.
